ABOUT THE BOOK: “STATISTICAL MECHANICS (Concepts and Applications)” has been written to cater to undergraduate students majoring in Physics (NEP, Hons., etc) and Engineering. Postgraduate students of Physics can also find the book's material useful. The material contained in this book presents fundamental concepts of equilibrium statistical mechanics. It has a total of eleven chapters, starting from the very basics of statistical mechanics. The ensemble theory, statistical distributions of classical and quantum particles, applications of different statistics for ideal systems, classical and quantum theories of blackbody radiation, and the modern theory of phase transition are included in the book. The important mathematical relations are given, in the form of a summary, at the end of the text of each chapter. The salient features of the book are:
- Simple, lucid, student-friendly approach, and self-explanatory
- Concise and balanced account of the fundamental aspects
- Complete mathematical derivation with physical interpretation
- Distinctive presentation style combining clarity
- Enriched with end-chapter problems both solved and unsolved
- Objective questions for review and enrichment of ideas

The incorporation of all these elements enhances the utility of the book for both University examinations and competitive examinations, such as JAM, NET, SET, JEST, GATE, and M.Sc. entrance tests, among others.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Dr. Probodh Kumar Kuiri is presently Professor at the Department of Physics, Sidho-Kanho-Birsha University, Purullia, West Bengal, India. He also served as head of the same department. Graduating with Honours in Physics from J.K. College, Purulia, he completed his M.Sc. (Physics) from the University of Burdwan in 2002. In the same year, he successfully qualified for the National Eligibility Test (NET) and Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST). Dr. Kuiri completed his post M.Sc. coursework and Ph.D. from the Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar (an autonomous research institute under DAE, GoI). With more than 16 years of teaching and research experience, he supervised a number of Ph.D. candidates and published more than 65 research papers in various peer-reviewed international journals, including Phys. Rev. Lett. The research interest of the author is in the areas of small-scale materials (Nano and Quantum Sciences & Technologies) - theory and experiments. The author has/is carried/carrying out research projects funded by SERB, GoI; DST, GoI; and DSTBT, GoWB. He participated in a large number of conferences - international and national. Dr Kuiri is a member of the American Nano Society. He was honoured as the outstanding reviewer for the journal ‘Nano Express’ (IOPScience) for the year 2022.
