ABOUT THE BOOK:  Mathematical Statistics has become a major tool of research in different natural, physical and social sciences. This book gives a systematic exposition of the theory of Mathematical Statistics as is required at the Undergraduate (Honours) and Postgraduate courses in Statistics and Mathematics. The basic requirement for reading the book is knowledge in Mathematics up to the graduation level including a course in Calculus. The ideas have been illustrated with a large number of examples at each step and supplemented by a number of exercises. The research students in statistics may also find parts of the book useful.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Dr. Parimal Mukhopadhyay (1945), Ph.D., is a former professor at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata. Besides ISI, he taught at the University of Ife, Nigeria, Moi University, Kenya; Stockholm University, Sweden; University of South Pacific, Fiji; Sultan Qaboos University, Oman; University of Qatar; University of South Africa and visited several Universities such as University of Montreal, Carleton University, University of Western Ontario, University of Waterloo, University of Windsor, Canada; the University of Western Australia as a research scientist. He has to his credit more than sixty publications (some co-authored) in survey sampling. His published books are Theory of Probability (1991), Mathematical Statistics (1996), Inferential Problems in Survey Sampling (1996), Theory and Methods of Survey Sampling (1998), Small Area Estimation in Survey Sampling (1998), Applied Statistics (1999), Topics in Survey Sampling (2000), An Introduction to Estimating Functions (2004) and Survey Sampling (in Press). He is a life member of the Indian Statistical Association, an elected member of the International Statistical Institute, a member of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.
