ABOUT THE BOOK: This book contains fifteen chapters. It starts with an introduction to classical mechanics in chapter 1 and ends with an introduction to density functional theory in the last section of chapter 15. Chapters 2-14 deal mainly with the historical development, basic principles, and theorems of quantum mechanics, solution of the Schrodinger equation for some exactly solvable system, and quantum mechanical treatments of many-electron atoms and molecules. The inclusion of a large number of worked-out examples, and of problems with a solution or hints for the solution, discussion of chemical bonding using a quantitative approach, a brief discussion of the second quantization method for electrons, etc. are some of the distinctive features of the book. The book is primarily intended for M.Sc. Chemistry students of Indian universities, IIT’s and other institutions. The last six chapters of the book dealing with many-electron atoms and molecules could be used for a post-M.Sc. course (as offered to the Ph.D. students) on quantum chemistry.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Dr. A. B. Sannigrahi did his M.Sc. in chemistry, Ph.D. in physical chemistry, and D.Sc. in quantum chemistry from Calcutta University. His total teaching and research experience covers a period of about four decades, of which he spent 32 years as faculty and 5 years as CSIR Emeritus Scientist at the chemistry department of IIT, Kharagpur, Prof. Sannigrahi carried out research work for a year at Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, as a Unesco fellow, for two years and three months at the University of Bonn, Germany, as a Humboldt fellow, and for three months each at Wuppertal University, Germany, and the University of New Brunswick, Canada, as a visiting professor. Prof. Sannigrahi has published about 140 research papers.
